WORKS ON TEXTILES, CANVAS AND PAPER
The Primal View artworks consider the most basic 'primal' view of the body is what we see when we look down at its physicality in front of us, which has the capacity to offer a greater connection between mind and body - and therefore the self. Therefore we might consider the doppelganger view the body is the one we are most used to, and used to: the unphysical body we see in a mirror or a photograph which feeds our image, our ego and the presentation of ourselves to the world.
This rarely seen or explored, perhaps forgotten viewpoint of the human body was first explored by Joan Semmel. Ruth intends for it not to be forgotten in favour of what might be perceived as the 'shadow side' reflection we are accustomed to.
